Searching by Title in the Library Catalog

Below the Quick Search box on the main search screen, there are several specific searches listed. These are called "Guided" searches because helpful information and examples are provided to guide you for each type of searches. Let's take a look at the title search screen.

[guided searches]

Notice the examples that are given. They indicate that you may enter a complete title or just part of the title, starting with the first word in the title. Initial articles (a, an, the, etc.) are ignored. You do not have to capitalize any of the words.

The Advanced example shows how you can search for single-word titles by using the pipe symbol ( | ). This symbol is often found paired with the backslash ( \ ) to the right of your keyboard.

What if you don't know the complete title or the first word in a title? What if you only know a few words somewhere in the title? We'll see how to search for keywords in a title later when we discuss keyword searches.
