Constructing Your Search Request

Every search tool has its own method of handling the words you type in for your topic. Reading the instructions (or search tips) that come with a particular engine or directory can help you narrow your results to just the information you are seeking.

The good news is that most instructions are very short and to the point. They also provide examples showing how to enter your search request.

On the next page, we'll discuss some general guidelines for using most search engines. Then we'll look at examples of some special features available on a few specific tools.
